Sales cut-offs Updated 22 Oct 2026

How Late Can You Purchase Lottery Tickets?

Every lottery stops selling lines for a draw some time before the balls are drawn. The lottery sets that cut-off, and shops and lottery sites can close their own sales earlier still, because they need time to place your line.

When you buy makes no difference to your chance. A line bought a week ahead and a line bought a minute before the cut-off are equally likely to win. The only things that change your chance of the jackpot are which lottery you play and how many different lines you hold.

So the practical rule is simple: find the cut-off for your lottery and for the place you buy from, and buy well before it.

  • The lottery sets the latest cut-off
  • Sellers can close earlier
  • Buying time does not change the odds

Timing does not matter; lines do

A common belief is that buying early, or at the last minute, helps. It does not.

Each combination has the same chance in every draw. What does change your chance is holding more different lines: ten lines are ten times as likely to hit as one, and cost ten times as much. The ladder shows Powerball jackpot odds as the number of lines grows.

  1. 1 line 1 in 292,201,338
  2. 10 lines 1 in 29,220,134
  3. 50 lines 1 in 5,844,027
  4. 100 lines 1 in 2,922,013
  5. 500 lines 1 in 584,403
Lines Group odds of the jackpot Against one line
1 line 1 in 292,201,338 1× as likely
10 lines 1 in 29,220,134 10× as likely
50 lines 1 in 5,844,027 50× as likely
100 lines 1 in 2,922,013 100× as likely
500 lines 1 in 584,403 500× as likely

One Powerball line has jackpot odds of 1 in 292,201,338. Different lines add their chances; a shared prize is split by share.

How not to miss a draw

  1. Find two cut-offs

The lottery's own, and the earlier one set by your shop or lottery site. The earlier one is the one that counts for you.

    Do this
  2. Mind the time zone

US draws are timed in Eastern Time and European draws in local time. Convert to your own clock.

    Do this
  3. Buy ahead or subscribe

Most sites let you buy for several draws at once or set up a subscription, so a busy evening does not cost you a draw.

    Do this
  4. Check the confirmation

Make sure your line shows the right draw date. A line bought after the cut-off usually goes into the next draw instead.

    Do this
  5. Keep the spend fixed

A subscription repeats your spend every draw. Set it at an amount you would be content to lose.

Panel Questions

Questions about buying lottery tickets in time

Can I buy a lottery ticket after the cut-off?

Not for that draw. Once sales close, a line you buy is entered into the next draw. Check the draw date on your ticket or in your account.

Does buying a ticket early or late change my chances?

No. The draw is random and does not depend on when a line was bought. Only the lottery you choose and the number of different lines you hold change your chance of the jackpot.

Why does my lottery site close sales earlier than the lottery?

A site that buys an official ticket for you has to place it before the lottery's own cut-off, so it stops taking orders earlier. Sites that take a bet on the result set their own deadline. The site shows it on each lottery page.

Can I buy lottery tickets in advance?

Yes. Most lotteries and lottery sites let you buy for several draws ahead, and many sites offer subscriptions that renew each draw. Read our guide to lotto memberships and subscriptions.

Can I buy tickets for a lottery in another country?

Many lottery sites sell entries to foreign lotteries, either by buying a ticket on your behalf or by taking a bet on the result. Check that the site is licensed where you live. Compare sellers in our lottery site rankings.

Where can I check the result?

Results are published by each lottery shortly after the draw. You can also find them on our results page, and lottery sites match results to your lines for you.

Set the spend before you pick the numbers.

Most lottery lines win nothing. Decide a monthly amount you can lose, and use the deposit limits on the site you play at.
